Indian Railways' plan covers improvements on all platforms, station buildings circulating areas, parking areas, traffic movement, parcel movement/stacking area, signages at platforms, ecurity arrangements and station cleanliness. 

In an attempt to improve passenger amenities and facilities on Indian Railways trains to make the journey of passengers comfortable and pleasant, Ministry of Railways has formed a committee of senior officers to identify that the same should be improved at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway station. The committee was also tasked with preparing the comprehensive action plan for removal of any deficiencies at this station. The committee examined the Indian Railways station premises and prepared an action plan for execution of it in three phases, Ministry of Railways' statement said.

Mumbai may get 72 semi-AC local trains this year

The announcement came after MP Kirit Somaiya raised the issue of the new AC trains needed improvement in Parliament. “I drew the attention of the railway minister towards the fact that the newly launched AC train services need improvement. I suggested that instead of plying complete AC trains, they could run semi AC trains on Central Railway and Western Railway.

Somaiya later tweeted: “Minister assured 6 dozen such locals will start operating in Mumbai in the year 2018.”

On February 25, a team of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, CR, WR, Research Standards and Designs Organisation had finalized the proposal for semi-AC locals.

The drainage system and clearance of logged water from the railway station yard and surrounding areas during heavy rains is a major problem, a senior railway official said. The municipal drain connecting to station areas is inadequate to discharge heavy flooded rain of the area. The huge volume of rain water from Ashok Nagar locality and station area overflows and comes to south end and also north end of Bhubaneswar railway station yard. The flooding of yard by heavy rains was making the points non-functional and leading to signal failure and ultimately causing disruption of train traffic, he said.

113-yr-old steam engine attracts tourists on Shimla-Kalka track

A 113-year-old heritage steam engine has become the centre of attraction for tourists in Shimla as they have been booking a ride to enjoy the curvy Shimla-Kalka Heritage track.

British tourists especially book the train from Shimla to Kaithlighat, which crosses over a dozen tunnels during its journey. “Travelling on the heritage track, that too in a heritage train, is intriguing and very exciting,” said a British tourist, Steven Caddis, who was on his first visit to India.

Railways to open another halt station on Baramulla-Banihal line

The Ministry of Railways has accepted the Jammu and Kashmir government's recommendation to open up a halt station on the Baramulla-Banihalrail line in the Valley, an official said today.

The decision was today conveyed by Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, an official spokesman said.

"I am delighted to inform you that all the above-mentioned halt stations have been approved on passenger amenity ground," Goyal said in a communication to the chief minister.

India to provide survey report on Fiji's railway system

At a meeting on the margins of the Solar Alliance Founding Conference in New Delhi, India, Indian Minister for Railways and Coal Piyush Vedprakash Goyal confirmed the participation of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) to provide a thorough survey report of the whole railway system in Fiji and to present a cost-benefit analysis to both governments.

Pune railway station to soon get safe selfie point

The Central Railway will set up ‘selfie points’ at some stations, including the Pune junction.

“The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation(IRSDC) has been given the task of re-developing 600 stations across the country with the help of private players. Besides, the Indian Railway will also renovate and develop 70 stations across the country on their own, which will include ‘selfie points’ as well. We will hold a meeting with the stations’ officials coming under the Pune division this week or next week and a consultant for the project will be finalized,” an official of the Pune rail division told TOI.
